The Baška Tablet is the oldest Glagolitic monument in Croatia. It was written in the Glagolitic script - a Slavic script that was developed from a stylised version of Greek cursive in the mid-9th century. The Baška Tablet is also important because it mentions the name of the Croatian king Zvonimir, which makes it the oldest document in which a Croatian name has been written in the Croatian language.  The Tablet is actually a certificate on the donation of land gifted by king Zvonimir to the Benedictine monastery of St Lucy.

More details

  • Can you imagine a gift card which weighs 800 kilograms? Well, it wasn't so unusual in the 12th century. Baška tablet weighs exactly that amount. The inscribed stone slab records a donation of a piece of land to the Church of St. Lucy. Baška tablet's replica is now on display in the Church of St Lucy in Jurandvor (near Baška) on the island of Krk, and the original is kept in the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb.
  • Baška tablet dates back to 1100 and it is one of the most significant Croatian monuments because its inscription is the basis of each Croatian language and literature research.
  • The Church of St Lucy is a small Romanesque building with a bell tower. It still cherishes the old custom of throwing a small bread (Cro. hlipcić) from the church bell tower after mass held on the day honouring St Lucy, 13 December. This several centuries old custom originates from the era when the nearby mill was owned by the church and the flour was given away to the local inhabitants in the honour of St Lucy. The locals used it to make the bread and then threw it to the gathered devotees from the bell tower.
