Franciscan Monastery

The centuries-old monastery building is located near the harbour of Makarska. The Franciscans came to Makarska at the end of the 15th century and settled by the Church of St. Mary. Their residence was designated a monastery that has been through many a hardship together with the church: demolitions by the Venetians and Ottomans, fires, and earthquakes. Despite everything, the Franciscans managed to establish a library containing around 5,000 books, 24 incunables, many journals, and manuscripts. The monastery possesses a rich archive, in which 369 Ottoman documents are kept.
