More details

  • You will find the tower at the very entrance to the old centre of Motovun, so you can take a look at its lapidarium straight away. There are machicolations above the town’s entrance and exit gates through which the city’s defenders would throw heavy objects or pour boiling oil or water on enemies.
  • Head towards Motovun’s main square and visit the 17th century Church of St. Stephen and the 12th century Municipal Palace.
  • Motovun’s bell tower, which stands beside the church, gives the town a special feel. It is 27m high, and it was built in the 13th century as the town’s main watchtower.
  • You simply can’t visit Motovun without taking a walk around its beautifully preserved walls, which were built in the distant 11th and 12th centuries.
  • An excellent spot for a short break and a perfect snapshot is the loggia on Josef Ressel Square, named after the inventor of the boat propeller, where you can take in a beautiful orange sunset.
