More details

  • This narrow-gauge rail line joined the numerous places and peoples of Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. It was built by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy at the turn of the 20th century
  • The line changed hands through 5 states during its lifetime, and today you will find the remnants of stations, platforms, tunnels and bridges.
  • Part of the Sarajevo – Zelenika (Montenegro) rail line passed through Konavle, and this is the part of the line you will be cycling along.
  • Near Vojski Do, once the first train station in Konavle, visit one of the largest groups of Mediaeval tombstones in Croatia in the village of Brotnice. These tombstones, which bear carved scenes from the lives of the deceased, are so historically valuable that they have been placed on the UNESCO world heritage list.
  • The route will lead you to a tunnel in Mihanići that is home to a colony of 2,700 bats. In order to protect these fascinating, threatened mammals, passing through the tunnel is forbidden. However, you can enjoy watching them at dusk at the resting point at the southern entrance to the tunnel.
  • Along the stretch from Vojski Do to Mihanići, enjoy the magical view of Konavle field and its countless vineyards. Grapes have been grown here since the late 17th century, and the most common varieties are Merlot, Maraština and Dubrovnik Malvasia.
