Balbi's Arch

  • Location

    Rovinj

Once upon a time, the main gate of the fortified town of Porton Della Pescheria stood on the site of Balbi's Arch. In the 17th century, by the decision of the local government, the old town gate was razed, and a monument of sorts to the then-mayor Daniel Balbi was erected in its place. Read the inscription on the arch and discover the history of Rovinj!

More details

  • At top Balbi's arch stands the Venetian Lion of St Mark holding an open book, signifying that Rovinj accepted the administration of the Venetian Republic without war.
  • Immediately below the stone lion, you may notice the coats of arms of the Balbi family, added a hundred years after this Baroque style arch was erected.
  • Balbi's arch is now the main entrance to the old town centre of Rovinj, declared a culture heritage site in 1963.
  • To the left of Balbi's arch, you may find the imposing Municipal Palace and old Town Hall, the ground floor of which once housed the prison.
  • When entering the old town look up to the rooftops and you will see many Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical windows, balconies, baladur type gallery stairs and altana rooftop terraces. Looking down you'll see portals and skalinada street front staircases.
  • Stroll down the narrow stone-paved streets and discover the town's squares and churches, the best known of which is the Church of St Euphemia, and the stunning Renaissance and Baroque period houses.
  • Be sure to visit the town's main square and see what time it is on the mid-nineteenth century town clock – there is sure enough time to visit the nearby Rovinj Heritage Museum.
