The Istarski razvod route leads you past mediaeval Istrian monuments from Labin to Kršan. Start in the old town of Labin, located on a hill at 320m above sea level. From Labin, head through Vinež towards Golji and Sveti Martin. The village of Sveti Martin grew around what was once the noble estate of the Battiala-Lazzarini family, in whose courtyard you can today rest and take in the healing scent of pine forest. If you continue on via the village of Martinski, you will reach Šumber, where you will find the ruins of a 17th century feudal castle. Ride on through Potpićan to Kršan, which features one of the best-kept fortresses in all of Istria. Remember this place well! It was here, among the high walls of the fortress, that the important mediaeval document this route was named after (En: The Istrian Book of Boundaries) was discovered in 1850. The route then leads you towards Nedešćina and the industrial zone, and then back to Labin.

  • The old town of Labin will thrill you with its beautiful 16th century Porta Sanfior city gate, the town loggia and the palaces of the Franković, Manzini, Scampicchio and Negri families, as well as the Battiala-Lazzarini palace which now houses the National Museum and a replica of a mine shaft. Find out why Lonely Planet has it listed as one of the 10 most original museums in Croatia!
  • If you want to take a panorama photo which will make all your friends green with envy, climb up to Fortica lookout point in the old centre of Labin.
  • Make sure to stop at the village of Sveti Martin to feel the 19th century country atmosphere at the Baron Lazzarini’s palace. You will approach the palace through a stone gate and along a row of hundred-year-old chestnut trees. The beauty of the Baron’s garden will thrill you even today. There is also a tavern in the palace, where you can try Istrian ‘supa’, a local specialty made with wine, bread and olive oil.
  • In Šumber, explore the remnants of a fortress inherited in the year 1260 by the Schönberg family, which the village was named after. If you like legends, here’s one related to Šumber: in 1430, a shepherd girl saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the branches of a cornel tree. The Church of the Madonna of the Cornel was built a few years later near the tree – pop in and take a look.
  • In Kršan, explore the ruins of the mediaeval fortress where the Istrian Book of Boundaries was discovered in the 19th century. This book is a valuable 14th century document that defined the borders of municipal lands in Istria.
